The Historic Ambassador was designed by renowned architect Carl L. Linde in 1922-1923 and has been considered one of Portland’s most prestigious
addresses for 100 years. The engineering and construction methods utilized were the highest quality with reinforced (steel rebar) concrete footings, foundation walls, columns and beams, floor slabs and roof slabs. The nine-story Jacobean style building was elegantly finished with
Columbian brick facing and cast Boise sandstone. Originally designed as high style apartment residences, with onsite maids quarters, which today serves as a well appointed, reservable guest room for overnight visitors of
the Ambassador residents. Iconic movers and shakers of early Portland were drawn to the building due to its prestige, charm, and location. The building was converted to 48 elegant condominiums in 1978. There are now 45 units due to a few residents enlarging units by combining units.
The building offers many benefits to the residents including a rooftop deck planted with established climbing roses. Additional amenities include storage spaces and bike parking as well as a shared laundry facility. Being
on the National Register of Historic Places the building retains many of the original features and architectural elements. The mail boxes are works of art while the original phone system and call box delightfully remains as a
relic from a bygone era. Positioned in a culturally diverse location of downtown Portland, next to the prestigious University Club and around the corner to the Performing Arts Center and Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall. Historic Information Sourced from the Ambassador Handbook
Steeped in History Impossible to duplicate, the Historic Ambassador stands as it did the day it was built in 1922. A pair of cast concrete lions watch protectively, set atop of the
handsome columns flanking the front steps. Pride of ownership is apparent the moment one gazes upon the impeccably maintained central courtyard. Note the detailed cast concrete and wall sconces in the entry portico. Stepping inside the building’s lobby we are taken back to the era of prewar construction. Here parquet oak floors meet staircases with wrought iron railings and mirrored French paned doors. Imagine walking into this architectural moment every day and calling this home. The elevator, featuring oak parquet floors, brass accents, and a welcoming settee, stands ready to whisk you up to your floor. On the 5th floor, turn right
and follow the hallway to find unit 506. The entry hall welcomes you with hardwood floors, tall baseboards, and soaring 9-foot ceilings, along with a convenient front hall closet perfect for coats and hats. The foyer opens to a commodious living room featuring 9-foot ceilings adorned
with elegant stacked crown molding and a large triple-set south-facing window that fills the space with natural light. Hardwood floors run throughout, adding warmth and timeless character. Picture rail moldings frame the windows and charming city views, while the living room flows effortlessly into the dining room, creating an inviting and
seamless space for everyday living and entertaining.
As you make your way down the hall, you’ll pass a charming built-in cubby still housing the original telephone once used to call building staff or buzz open the front door in a bygone era. Enter through a swinging butler door into the kitchen, featuring parquet floors, a stainless steel freestanding refrigerator, freestanding electric range, and original built-ins with Shaker-style cabinetry. There is also a built-in dishwasher and tons of room for storage The dining room features hardwood floors, casement windows with city views, picture rail moldings, and built-ins perfect for displaying treasured family heirlooms. Chunky millwork richly frames the windows, doorways, and ceiling, while an elegant original chandelier beautifully ties the space together. Adjacent to the bathroom is the guest bedroom, or bedroom #2, a versatile space that functions beautifully as either a bedroom or home office. The room features hardwood floors, picture rail moldings, a closet, and a convenient Murphy bed. Finally, across the hall, you'll find the spacious primary bedroom. It features wood floors, picture rail moldings, tall baseboards and elegant chunky millwork which frame the windows and doors. As you make your way back down the entry hall, you’ll pass the full bathroom featuring a pedestal sink with mirrored vanity and a walk-in shower. The rooftop deck offers the perfect place to gather and enjoy the lavish roses. This retreat is available to reserve for intimate gatherings. 360 degree views of downtown Portland never disappoint! The large and recently updated laundry room is located on the lower level of the building. The building cap for in-unit washer/dryers has been met. There is also a luxuriously appointed guest room with full bath that is available to reserve for $50 a night for resident’s overnight guests.
